How does VSL#3 work?

Watch the animation below to find out

VSL#3 acts as a protective barrier in your gut1

It does this by lining your gut with the right type and amount of bacteria.

The beneficial bacteria in VSL#3 help your gut bacteria to:

  • Protect the inner layer of your gut from pathogens, which can adversely affect your intestinal health.2
  • Compete for space and nutrition with harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, thus preventing their numbers getting too high and consequently causing illness.2
  • Digest certain foods so all the energy is salvaged and nutrients are absorbed.2
  • Prevent pathogens moving from the gut into the blood. This is important because your gut is the main way pathogens can enter your body (through eating and drinking) so it is essential to stop them spreading further.3

Due to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) rulings regarding the use of the terminology "probiotic", we now refer to VSL#3 as a poly-biotic which highlights its combination of 8 different strains and 450 billion bacteria.
